What is NoteMapper?

NoteMapper is an interactive tool designed to help musicians understand how notes are laid out across two of the most popular instruments—piano and guitar. By selecting a key on the piano, you can instantly see all the positions of the same note across the guitar fretboard.

Whether you're a beginner learning note positions or an advanced musician exploring scales, chords, or arpeggios, NoteMapper bridges the gap between the keyboard and fretboard, making it easier to understand music theory in a visual and practical way.

Understanding Notes and Octaves:

In music, each note is part of a repeating series called an octave, ranging from A to G. The color-coded octaves in NoteMapper help you understand how pitch changes across the instrument:

  • Low octaves represent lower pitches.
  • High octaves represent higher pitches.
  • Note Names: Notes are named using letters A to G, with sharps (♯) and flats (♭) indicating slightly higher or lower pitches.

How Notes Relate Between Piano and Guitar:

The piano is laid out in a linear fashion, with each key representing a single note in ascending pitch. The guitar is more complex, with multiple ways to play the same note due to its string and fret layout. NoteMapper visualizes these connections:

  • One piano key can appear in multiple places on the guitar.

How to Use NoteMapper:

  1. Tap a piano key to highlight matching notes across the guitar fretboard.
  2. Observe how the selected note appears in multiple positions on the fretboard.
